ENBBC 2009 test piece

We are delighted to announce that a new work by Paul Lovatt-Cooper entitled 'Within Blue Empires' will be the test-piece for the English National Brass Band Championships (ENBBC) taking place in Preston’s Guild Hall on Saturday 27 June, 2009.

The composition follows a programmatic brief, focusing on the sea and in particular the life of whales. Within Blue Empires explores the various aspects of the sea and whales, including sections entitled: The Deep, The Mother and Her Baby Calf, Feeding, Prepare to Set Sail, Out at Sea, Calm Waters, The Breach and The Finale.

Commenting on his work Paul Lovatt-Cooper said: “Within Blue Empires is an exciting modern score that pushes the boundaries of brass band music. Whilst performing this work, bands will be required to play a CD track of sea sounds and whale songs which will be provided. Also some musicians will be required to emulate the whale ‘spouts’ as the great mammal blows out air by the water’s surface.”

Relinquishing playing duties

Paul Lovatt-Cooper has confirmed that as the composer in association and percussionist with one of the competing bands, Black Dyke, he will be relinquishing his commitments from the band two months prior to the contest. This means that Paul will not be performing with the band at the English National Championships nor will he be performing with the band two months prior to the contest. Also, Paul will have no contact with both the band and their conductor Dr. Nicholas Childs regarding the piece.

Exciting workshops and masterclasses
During the build up to the contest, Paul will present a workshop and master class on Within Blue Empires. This presentation will be broadcast on the internet, giving all competing bands, conductors, adjudicators and audiences a unique insight into the piece to aid them in their contest preparations.

Editor’s notes:
• Within Blue Empires is a commissioned work by Graham Taylor who is a successful design consultant who resides in Lesmahagow, Scotland.
• Graham came across Paul’s music when his son Colin, who plays Bass Trombone with the Third Section Coalburn Silver Band, were working on Paul’s The Dark Side of the Moon for the Regional Championships 2008. Graham became immediately inspired by Paul’s music and wanted to commission a piece of music from Paul.
• Graham has a great love of the sea and sea life, in particular whales and Orca. Whilst Graham was whale watching on the west coast and the east coast of Canada he became inspired and fell in love with the great animal and felt that the brass band sonority was befitting such a magnificent creature.
