CRB Check

CRB Check information

ISA Vetting & Barring Scheme

From the 12th October 2009 there will be changes in the way CRB checks are made.

Most of the checks we make on behalf of our member bands have been Standard Checks – this mean that they are only checked via the Police National Computer Records, Sec.142 Education Act 2002, protection of Children Act List information and Protection of Vulnerable Adults list.

From October 12th the new system, ISA ‘Children’s List & Vulnerable Adults List, will replace all of the above.

The checks will be more thorough and we will now be required to do enhanced checks on all persons working with Children and Vulnerable Adults.

There are new rules for people employed, but most of our members are volunteers so I do not need to go into this area. If you are interested yourself you may go to http://www.crb.gov.uk/VBS for more information.

What it does mean to us within the banding movement is that we all need to look more closely at our Child Protection Policy www.bfbb.co.uk/Child_Protection_Framework_policy.htm and that more of us will need to be checked.

The new legislation is as always a minefield but if we use common sense and be aware of what we do within our bands we should be fine.

If you are in any way not sure then contact, Derek Atkinson the BFBB Officer who deals with CRB

Implementing basic child protection and safeguarding procedures is relatively straightforward for brass bands now that BFBB has become a Registered Body with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB).

As a registered umbrella body, BFBB will endeavour to process applications quickly and without any fuss for bands.

This service is free of charge to member bands, and a small administration charge will be made for applications received from non-member bands and other organisations.

It is very important that all bands use the CRB facility. We know that many of you have not registered your members to-date so we advise you to take a look at the procedures you have in place to see if they are up to date. We advise that any senior members who work with young people agree to a CRB check. If you apply for some grants or apply for charitable status you will need to have your CRB checks in place.
