Robert Morgan
Robert Morgan has been connected with brass bands for 51 years and began playing the cornet at the age of 10. He has just completed 51 years of unbroken service to his local band, Lydbrook, as a player and conductor and has been secretary for 30 years. He still plays the cornet and the odd solo competition encourages him to practice hard.
During his time as conductor of Lydbrook Band in the 70’s he enjoyed some happy years as principal cornet with Cinderford Band before moving to the Sun Life Stanshawe Band on the front row.
He enjoyed many years as a player and secretary of the Forest of Dean Youth Band and was also a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain for a couple of years. At the age of 18 he was awarded the title of Champion Cornet Player of Great Britain at the Oxford Solo & Quartet Championships.
Robert has always been interested in brass band administration and has served on the Gloucestershire Brass Band Association for over 40 years; 10 years of those as Chairman. He has also served on the West of England Council of Brass Bands Association and for 15 years (retiring in 2008) was England’s representative on the European Brass Band Association (EBBA).
Robert has been a member of the BFBB Executive Committee for 15 years; the last 5 years as Chairman.
In the New Year Honours List for 2008 Robert was awarded an MBE for his
services to brass band music.
