Charles Woodward

At the age of eleven Charles started his banding career in the Salvation Army at Prescot, Lancashire. There, in addition to playing trombone, he was Junior Band Leader for fifteen years. During that time he developed his love for teaching young players.
In 1980 Charles joined Bold Miners Band, St. Helens. There he was player, Bandmaster and finally Musical Director of the band. During that time he still pursued his interest in teaching young players.

Following a move to Stockport, Charles played with a number of local bands including Sale and Stockport Silver.

In 1993 Charles became Musical Director of New Mills Band and built up a very successful Youth Band organisation.

In 1995 Charles started up his present band ‘Goyt Valley Brass’ with players that he had taught. This work he still maintains and he continues to teach people of all ages.
A retired full time Youth Worker, having worked in St. Helens, Liverpool and Macclesfield, Charles has been involved in the development of young players throughout his banding career.

Charles has been involved in supporting bands in the High Peak District and North West of England through the NWABBA for more than sixteen years. He is currently Chairman of the High Peak District of NWABBA.
